Daily Routine
This morning, I was able to get back into my morning routine. I had skipped it for many days because my son graduated from high school, and we had both sides of our family over to celebrate. It was a beautiful weekend but the “To Do List” to prepare was very long. I was grateful to return to my mat this morning and finally get my full sadhana in. This has been a very emotional time for me. My only child is getting ready to leave home and go off to college. Things are going to be fundamentally different for my husband and me. And yet, when I probably needed it the most, I stopped my morning practice because I was “too busy.” Does that sound familiar? But this morning, it was a sweet return to what I know fundamentally shifts and supports my sense of well-being.
Ayurveda emphasizes a daily self-care routine called Dinacharya. This regime can be modified depending on your dosha and the season. Creating a regular rhythm to your day is soothing to your nervous system and balancing to your circadian cycle. Get up, exercise, eat meals, go to sleep at the same time of the day. Studies show that, “Routine enhances feelings of safety, confidence, and well-being in many aspects of everyday life.”[1]
I’ll have more next week on Dinacharya.
